I have seen some impressive patchwork quilts in my time. Whether it’s shapes and simple outlines made from square patches or even more complicated patterns done with a hexagonal pattern, they have been as individual and as inspiring as the individuals who created them.

However, after attending {a quilting} exhibition in my home city I have massively had my eyes opened to the possibilities and complexities of designs of folks truly push themselves to their limit.

Mosaic Pattern

Triangles and trapezoids is the simplest way to explain this monster. This design appears to be a massive mosaic of interlocking shapes, giving off a dynamic and decorative aura. When having a look at it closer, the pattern was deceptively simple, the mosaics were stitched on to big squares, which were then stitched together to give a complex mosaic pattern.

While the idea was basic, the result was impressive!

Stars Quilt

Another quilt that grabbed my attention was a superb design that used interlocking stars as the pattern. These were not an easy 5 or 6 pointed star, the stars had a zig zag edge, which was then used to fasten into and sew along with other stars.

The pattern encompassed a great combination of black, white and yellow stars that proved to be greatly effective at catching people’s interest.

Circle Shaped Quilt

The final, and most intricate pattern that caught my eye was a circular quilt. The catch was this was a patchwork quilt using squares. The quilter had made the peak of the square a little smaller than the bottom and then sewn all the squares with the top pointing to the middle.

Once stitched together, this naturally formed the outer edge into a circle shape.

So if you’ve made a number of patchwork quilts and you think you are ready to give a more challenging pattern a try, you might need to consider one of the patterns listed above!

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of rose quilts. I’ve made a number of them in my time and there appears to be no end on the horizon. I have had a number of folks comment on my {quilt} designs saying that they really like how I manage to do something different with each one and how each one doesn’t look much like 99% of the other rose quilts.

All of them wish to know what my secret is. Well I’ll tell you – it’s all in the way that you perceive your design. Like any budding artist, you have to first ‘want’ to make a different kind of quilt before you can go forth and do it. When I’m thinking of designs, there are a couple of different techniques I use.

Using Artworks Themselves

I don’t know if you are much of an art fan, but I am just fascinated by it. My first rose quilt design was inspired by an artwork I once saw in a gallery. There had been a lovely bunch of dandelions in a glass vase organized in a stunning lighting setting. I replaced the dandelions with roses and went ahead and made it. I continue to have it on my bed to this day.

Art and art studios are an excellent place to start if you’re looking at seeing differing types of designs.

Different Artistic Approaches

In a similar vein to art, there are different types of artistic styles you can play around with. Cubism is an often overlooked style when it comes to quilt designs and I’m not sure why. There would be no simpler image to apply to a quilt with less sewing required than this.

For people who are bold, you can look at impressionism or abstract art styles for your design. Be warned though, these varieties of designs are much harder to capture on a quilt, so make sure you are prepared before you attempt one of these.

If you do not have time to visit an art gallery, your local library should have lots of books on art you can look though to get some ideas. So now there’s not excuse for making a rose quilt that looks like everybody else’s – get inventive!

I am not sure about you, but I can’t stand spending more money on scrapbooking materials than I really have to. Being a devout disciple of cheap scrapbooking, I don’t see why so many scrapbookers spend so much money on purchasing scrapbooking supplies they could get from home.

A Hands On Approach

When searching through craft stores I have seen basic shapes like butterflies, sailing boats and even basic shapes like triangles and squares being sold in packets of ten’s!

With a touch of additional work, you might draw up exactly the same shape on some thick card, cut it out and use it as a template to cut out as many of the same shape as you like. To save even more time, you can stack up multiple sheets of paper before cutting to get a number of the same shape cut out every time.

D.I.Y Stickers

Stickers are also a large thing in scrapbooking. I have seen folk pay $10 for a roll of stickers of which they only used 3.

If you have got a printer attached to your PC, you should purchase a packet of specifically prepared sticker paper (which is cheap), pre-cut and prepared to be printed on. Put the sheets into your printer, find the image you need and use the software that came with your printer to add your image to the sheet.

The better part is, you can have a different image on each sticker on the same sheet – this is a great strategy for saving money.

Calligraphy Pens

A mate of mine had a collection of calligraphy pens sitting on a shelf in their home. I had an bright idea and borrowed them one day. I practised using them for an hour on 1 or 2 bits of paper, writing the titles of my album pages time after time. After I was finished, I selected the best looking one of each term and cut it out and added it to the top of the appropriate page.

This proved to be an easy and efficient way to add some charm to my scrapbooking albums at little cost to me.

Its not difficult to do scrapbooking on the cheap, all it takes is a small amount of imagination and some more work and you can save a serious sum of money on your next album.

Believe it or not, craft stores are more costly than lots of other stores. Simply shopping around in other stores will yield you some great results. I have found many similar items stocked by Newsagents, Art shops and Office Supply stores, which you can buy in bigger quantities for a less expensive cost.

So stop paying a premium and do not be scared to look around!
